PVDF

Polyvinylidene fluoride is a semi crystalline thermoplastic fluoropolymer.
For a fluoropolymer it has very good mechanical properties, and
combines this with many of the attractive properties of PTFE
(polytetrafluorethylene), while it is processable at relatively low
temperatures. PVDF has an excellent resistance against chemicals and a
very low permeability, it does not absorb moisture, is ductile at low
temperatures and has a high Young's Modulus up to high temperatures. It has
a very low flammability with low smoke emission. Compared to other
fluoropolymers it has a relatively low density and price.

Specific properties
Density: 1.78 g/cm3

Mechanical properties: High Young's Modulus (ca. 2.5 GPa), high strength and
very low creep, especially in comparison with other fluoropolymers. Good
ductility and very good resistance to fatigue, ageing and weathering.
Low coefficient of friction and high wear resistance.

Thermal properties: Tg = -35 °C, Tm = 174 °C, maximum use temperature
150 °C. PVDF degrades only above 380 °C.

Chemical resistance: Very good resistance against many organic solvents,
strong acids, halogens and bases up to pH 11. Very good resistance to
UV and radioactive radiation.

Colour/surface
White translucent with glossy surface, looks like PP. The material coin is
in the natural uncoloured state. It Can be coloured. The surface is very
smooth and has a very low tendency for adhesion of (biological) fouling.

Processing
Injection mouldable at a melt temperature of 200 - 250 °C and a mould
temperature of 60 - 90 °C. PVDF has a relatively high shrinkage of around
3% due to the high crystallinity (50-60%). It can easily be welded with very
good weld line strength.

Applications
-Industry: Pipes and parts for tubing systems, valves, pump
components, vessels and tanks for chemicals, cable jacket and
cable/connector overmouldings, filter membranes and
housings, components for lithium-ion batteries. It has many
applications in the semiconductor industry, paper and chemical
process industry and the nuclear industry.
-Medical & food sector: applied in all kinds of components for
processes in the pharmaceutical and food processing industry
because of the high purity and certifications for food, water
and medicine contact.
